Many of our charter guests arrive for their charter hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the pods of Orca whales that call the San Juan Islands home. It can be difficult to predict where you will find these majestic creatures as they are continually in motion following their food source. With that said, we are always amazed by the stories of our charter guests who happen upon the whales, quite often when they were not even looking for them! If you’re lucky, you’ll have the opportunity to see these beauties in the wild too!

One very good way to learn about the local orca population is to visit the Whale Museum in Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island. The whale museum features exhibits focused specifically on the resident orcas of the Salish Sea, including a sightings map that may help you locate the Orcas to see them for yourself. (Make sure you’re familiar with the “Be Whale Wise” boating rules!) The museum also provides an overview of baleen whales, certain species of which pass through this area during their yearly migrations. At The Whale Museum you can also become acquainted with several other species of marine mammals that make their home in the San Juan Islands and that you are likely to encounter during your charter.

In addition to their exhibits, the Whale Museum also offers several educational programs geared toward both adults and children. If you have the interest these programs, which are ongoing throughout the year, will allow you to learn even more about whales, and the ecology of the Salish Sea.
