If you are lucky enough to be in the San Juan Islands on the 4th of July, you are in for an exciting celebration! No matter which island you visit, there are activities for the whole family to enjoy.
If you are on San Juan Island on July 4th, spend the day at the San Juan Island Historical Museum, enjoying the annual Pig War picnic. There will be music, a pie-eating contest, kids’ games, and a community parade. In the evening, you can choose to enjoy fireworks displays either in Friday Harbor or Roche Harbor. In Friday Harbor, check out the “Rock the Dock” dance down at the port. Fireworks are scheduled to begin at about 10 p.m. Roche Harbor has its own Old-Fashioned July 4th celebration featuring a fun run, log-rolling contest and blindfolded dinghy races during the day. The fireworks display at Roche Harbor is scheduled to begin at 10:30 p.m.
If you’re spending the weekend on Orcas Island, you can kick off your July 4th celebrations with a stop at the Orcas Island Live and Silent Auction, featuring a variety of items including antiques and collectibles. Then make sure grab a hearty breakfast at the Annual Pancake Breakfast at the Eastsound Fire Station. From there you can participate in a fun run/walk or watch the parade. The Lions’ Club sponsors a salmon bbq for lunch. The fireworks display over Eastsound will begin at approximately 10 p.m.
On Lopez Island, begin your day with a fun run/walk, followed by the Friends of the Lopez Library Annual Book Sale. The old-fashioned parade begins at 11a.m., followed by a community barbecue featuring locally sourced beef and vegetarian burgers. The fireworks will begin at approximately 10:30 p.m. at the Spit on Fisherman Bay.
If you decide to stay in Bellingham on Saturday night, there will be a lot to do within walking distance of the SJS docks. Daytime festivities include live music, a beer garden, and free activities for the whole family, including a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The fireworks will begin at about 10:30 p.m.
